Oliver Cubillos is a filmmaker and screenwriter from Los Angeles, California. As a recent graduate of Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, Oliver spent his final year working on HERMIT OR: THE IMMORTALITY OF THE CRAB as part of the school's competitive BFA program. He has written several feature screenplays and has directed a number of short films, music videos, and documentaries. With his work as a filmmaker and screenwriter, Oliver is drawn to stories that question the world around us. His works typically deal with themes like masculinity, desire, identity, and the environment.
With HERMIT OR: THE IMMORTALITY OF THE CRAB, Oliver hopes to show the dangers of isolation and the importance of community. The film follows a character who has submitted to a life of solitude and must find his purpose before it is too late. This journey of self-discovery is one that Oliver hopes inspires viewers to foster community in their own lives. To confront and dismantle the many social ills we face, we must operate with empathy for others and for ourselves. The film's message speaks to the dangers of isolation we face in our contemporary world, and the urgency to foster human connection.
This film is as much about a pet store as it is the queer experience. HERMIT OR: THE IMMORTALITY OF THE CRAB is a reflection of Oliver's own fears as a queer person: what happens if you lose contact with everyone you love? What happens if you have no place in the world around you? Living on the defense is something that many queer people must do. Sometimes it seems desirable to sink away from all the hatred—just as Gregory does in the film. However, as we see through Gregory’s fate, it is not possible to live a life of seclusion. One must embrace humanity regardless of their fears, because we absolutely depend on one another for survival, guidance, and love.
